Giving up the keys? Now what!?
By Christine Martin, Executive Director at Community Life Bridge
When it is time to stop driving, who do you call? This sounds like it would have a simple answer, but after seven years in senior transportation, I have learned it is more complicated than you might think. So, let’s break down some options:
Uber or Lyft: If you have technology and feel confident understanding how the ride-hailing companies work, this may be your option. It can be at the tip of your fingers and can be a customized ride to where you need to go. This is great if you live in an area like Hendersonville where there are Uber and Lyft drivers to pick up the ride. You can be taken around town, to the airport, downtown and really, just about anywhere you would like. If you need to make a stop though, you may have to request another car to get you to your destination. The cost is also based on miles, so be sure to consider that before downloading the app and requesting a car.
Community Life Ride: This is a volunteer-driven transportation program that provides one on one rides to program members. It requires someone to be 60 years old, get in and out of a car on their own as well as navigate a ride on their own. Rides are scheduled a week in advance with a charge of $6/roundtrip. Riders are provided one on one rides by volunteers who take them to up to two stops within Sumner County. Rides have some limits as far as length of time, number of stops and frequency. Due to the high demand in our community for this program, there is a waitlist in Hendersonville, so if this is what might work best, apply to be a member as soon as you know you might need it.
Mid-Cumberland Transportation: A circuit style transportation, Mid-Cumberland is a public transit that will take you to both in county and out of county destinations. A 24-hour notice is required for all local trips and 72-hour notice for out-of-county trips. Low-cost rides are provided for those who can get in and out of their buses and vans. Mid-Cumberland will get you where you need to go and then be back to pick you up after your appointment is over, when the route reaches your area.
Home Care with Transportation: Each home care company is different, but for those who offer transportation, this provides one-on-one rides with a caregiver. Home care can assist with other needs as well and be a consistent presence with you. A caregiver gets to know you as well as the places you go and what your unique preferences are at those places. This is a great option if you need a hand getting in and out of a car due to limited mobility. Many home care companies have a minimum number of hours, so this option is best paired with other services.
