By Christine Martin, Executive Director at Community

This week we often hear the word THANKFUL! We think about what we are grateful for in life and reflect on the many blessings that we have experienced. As I am reflecting on my own year, one of the things that has brought me joy has been to share the stories of those that I interview for the Aging Well section of the Hendersonville Standard.

Each story I encounter reflects a life well lived – a life dedicated to purpose, compassion and community! It has been an incredible privilege to sit down with individuals who, in their retirement years, continue to make a lasting difference through their time, talents, and generosity. Their stories remind me that fulfillment often comes not from what we gain, but from what we give.

When I think about those that I have had the honor of meeting this past year, I am thankful for each of them.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to get to know Jan Miles, who volunteers with Community Life Ride and Homebound Meals. As a widow herself, Jan ensures that other widows are cared for and their needs are met. She encourages me to be aware of those around me who used to have someone special in their life but now might need me to help them.

I appreciated the opportunity to get to know Flo White, who volunteers at the hospital. Her contagious smile greets you as you come through the door looking for your doctor’s office. Her joyful presence reminds me how powerful a simple smile can be in brightening someone’s day.

I was moved by the life of Rosalyn Donoho, who is a volunteer at Aveanna Hospice, doing her part to make sure that no one faces the end of life alone. She encourages me to see that just a little time given can mean so much to someone else.

And I am thankful to have gotten to know Martha Rouzer, a volunteer with the Sumner County Family Resource Center. Through her work, I’ve come to better understand the many needs within our school system and the difference one caring person can make.

These are just a few of the ladies I interviewed this year. I know I write this article for the readers, but this year, as I reflect, I am so thankful for the time I have spent learning and growing from those who are Living the Life to the Fullest as they age!  I hope you too are inspired and thankful for those in our community who are serving and that you find your place to serve – in an organization or on your own. You will truly find that it will bring you to a place where you are living your life in a more thankful and grateful way!
