Living Life to the Fullest: Car Conversations
By Christine Martin, Executive Director at Community Life Bridge
With the weather getting nice we are heading out and about more and more these days! Some of us may be taking trips around town, day trips or long road trips. What will you talk about? When you spend time in the car it is a great opportunity to have meaningful conversations. As a mother, I am intentional about talking to my children on our short trips to school or activities. We talk about the day, how they are feeling and I have the opportunity to answer a LOT of questions. As a wife, I enjoy time in the car with my husband, especially on longer trips where we have the ability to spend time talking. Do you take advantage of car conversations?
If you’re in a car with new people it can be hard to figure out what to talk about. When I ask the volunteers at Community Life Ride, a program of Community Life Bridge, what do you talk about in the car with those that you drive, I have heard various responses. Our volunteers often drive those they do not know. They have found that a simple question like, “Are you from this area?” leads to a lengthy life recollection. Many people are willing to share about their lives or about areas of their life if just asked. You can also just simply ask someone how their week is going. This gives a longer timeframe than just “How are you?”, implying right now and allows someone to share what they desire to share about the week.
When it comes to those you know well, one of the best places to find conversation can be outside the car. When you look around what do you see? We see one thing and think it is ugly or run down, the person sitting next to you may see artwork or beauty in the same picture outside the window. When I see a beautiful Victorian house with a wrap around porch, a flower garden in front and luscious green grass my eyes light up! My husband on the other hand sees a porch that needs maintenance, flowers that could just be mulch and a yard that he would like to duplicate. We see different things out the same window. I wouldn’t know that if we didn’t both look and talk about what we see though. So, take time to look out the window, see what you see and share it with those in the car. You might just see a different perspective.
How is this Living Life to the Fullest? Car rides are something that most of us experience on a regular basis. Take time to enjoy the ride, make memories from inside and outside the car. Talking to the person in the car with you might just bring more to your own life than you ever thought or imagined.
